Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport is among Indonesia’s busiest, with over 2.2 million passengers passing through its terminals monthly. Local authorities are enhancing efficiency and convenience for travelers.
Indonesian ministers are also exploring strategies to make flights more affordable for both domestic and international passengers.
Recently, the airport introduced a new set of autogates designed to expedite the arrival and departure processes for tourists. The initial autogates were made available earlier this year in the international terminals, and there are ongoing plans to expand their use to further enhance Bali’s immigration services.
The Head of the TPI Class I Immigration Office, Ngurah Rai Suhendra, highlighted that with 60 autogates in operation, the airport can now clear over 120 passengers per minute. An additional 30 autogates were recently installed, bringing the total to 60, with 20 more set to be operational by the end of the month, resulting in a total of 80 gates across the terminals.
These autogates are available to international travelers with electronic passports, those entering on an e-visa on arrival, any e-visa category, KITAS or KITAP holders, and travelers from visa-exempt countries such as ASEAN nations. Tourists are encouraged to apply for their e-VOA before arriving in Indonesia. The e-VOA is valid for 30 days and can be extended for another 30 days, all of which can be managed online. The e-VOA and VOA are available to travelers from 97 countries and cost IDR 500,000.
The automated system allows travelers to complete standard immigration checks, including stamping in and out of the country, within 20-30 seconds. This system is designed to minimize wait times, even during peak travel periods. While the automated system significantly streamlines the immigration process, it complements the work of immigration officers rather than replaces them.

The expansion of digitalized immigration and travel services is part of broader efforts to make travel to Bali more convenient. Additionally, there is a focus on ensuring that travel remains affordable.
The Indonesian Minister for Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno, visited Bali recently and expressed his support for a proposed policy change to eliminate specific flight taxes to help lower overall travel costs. He noted that these taxes contribute to high ticket prices and limit options for travelers flying in and out of Bali and for domestic flights. Minister Uno is also eager to encourage tourists to explore other regions of Indonesia during their visit.
However, Minister Uno acknowledged that removing flight taxes would necessitate finding alternative ways to compensate for the lost revenue. He suggested a mix of policies could be developed to offset the loss while potentially increasing state income through domestic tourism.
The Minister for Investment and Maritime Affairs, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, also announced plans to collaborate with airlines and transportation authorities to reduce flight costs or introduce subsidies to address rising flight prices. He mentioned that his team is evaluating aircraft operating costs as part of these efforts.
